Something new I've been thinking about...

Hey,
I just wanted to tell y'all something I've been thinking about doing with this here blog. For years I've been reading and watching other naturals conduct interviews of views of natural hair and the journeys of other naturals. When I would finish reading or watching the interviews I would always have other questions I wish they would have asked. So... I've been thinking of conducting my own interviews and posting them on my blog and every now and then have a male's perspective. That's all for now...much love and God Bless...Peace

Flat Twist!!!!

Hey Everyone,
As you know I've been trying to style my hair on my own. So today I did flat twists all on my own and it turn out better than I expected!! I tried them before when my hair was shorter and it didn't turn out so well. Yesterday I co-wash my hair with V05 conditioner ( the blackberry one, yummy ) and added my Nubian Heritaged Shea Butter lotion as a moisturizer, then I just let it air dry. Today I rinsed my hair in the shower and added my Shea butter lotion for added moisture ( really dry weather today ). I did three twists on the side and a pompadour in the front. For the back I just used a headband to hold it in a puff. The only thing I wish I could have done different was to have my hair streched beforehand. My reason for this is that my hair looks really short and I wanted big hair once I achieved this style. Thanks for reading my blog... Much love and many blessing....peace

Nubian Heritage Shea Butter

Product Review

Product Name:

Nubian Heritage Shea Butter Lavender and Wildflowers

Where did I find it:

Whole Foods

The Ingredients:

Shea Butter, Vitamin E, Lavender, Wildflowers

Rating:

Five out of Five

Your thoughts on it:

I love the smell of it. I tried this shea butter because I wanted a naturally scented shea butter mix. Even though it doesn’t say that it’s for hair, I figured it was ok. It makes my hair feel soft and it stays moisturized for a long time, usually until I shampoo or co-wash. The fragrance isn’t overpowering at all and it lingers in your hair as long as you have it in. The only products that I have tried it with are MyHoneychild Old Fashion Hair Grease, and the fragrances did not mesh well in my opinion. But overall it’s a great product.

Natural Hair Styles that I have tried

  • Two Strand Twist- I usually do them myself and they last for a decent amount of time. They can be styled multiple ways and they are easy to maintain. You can un-ravel them to achieve a twist out. To maintain just rub a little Shea butter at night mist with water in the morning and fluff.

  • Twist Out- Usually last about a week for me. Very cute and you can create different sizes according to the size twists that you create. To maintain just rub a little Shea butter at night mist with water in the morning and fluff.

  • Braids/Cornrows- Love them but hate to get them done (I’m very tender headed :’( ) Last about 2-3 weeks, I usually grease my scalp with Shea butter or some type of moisturizer. If done straight back I unravel for a braid out.

  • Braid Out- Can be done with plaits or cornrows. I prefer cornrows, but since I can’t braid to save my life I achieve this style through plaits. Last the same amount of time as twist outs and I follow the same maintenance.

  • Box Braids w/weave- Hated it!!! My hair became so frizzy and it didn’t last at all (my hair wouldn’t blend at all). I would not recommend unless you’re transitioning.

  • Box Braids w/o weave- It was ok. My hair still became frizzy but it wasn’t like it was like the weave. Followed the same maintenance as the two strand twist

  • Sew In/Weave (complete) - Loved it! It gave my hair a break and it was pretty easy to maintain. I had to use oil to moisturize my hair and scalp. The only cons were that my scalp would get itchy at times and that the weave was the same a maintaining relaxed hair, which I had forgotten how to do for a second.

  • Kinky Twist- Absolutely LOVED!!! Lasted a long time due to the fact that it blended very well with my natural hair. Easy to maintain, just moisturized my hair with oil and moisturized my hair with a hair lotion. I would use African Pride Braid Spray when my scalp became itchy.

  • Wigs- Love them…I use them every time I want to change up my look or want the look of straight or colored hair. I plait my hair underneath or have someone cornrow my hair and just moisturize my hair with water and Shea butter.

My Regime

Hey,

Just wanted to fill you guys in on my regime. Once a month a wash my hair with shampoo (Head and Shoulders) and deep condition (ORS Replenishing Pak) for about thirty to forty five minutes. Before I shampoo I divide my hair in four sections and then braid my hair in sixteen plaits, this helps a lot in my opinion. I usually shampoo in the shower, I take down one plait at a time and shampoo the scalp and let the suds from the shampoo clean my hair and I then braid it back with the shampoo still in. After I have shampooed all the plaits, I rinse the shampoo out while the plaits are still intact. It helps to squeeze the plaits while rinsing to make sure all the shampoo is out. After I’m done I repeat the same process for the deep conditioner the difference is that I detangle with my paddle brush at this stage. I use a regular clear plastic cap (unless I can’t find one then I use a good ole shopping bag), and do other stuff for about 30-45 minutes. I rinse it out the same way as I do the shampoo only this time it’s in a sink. After I shampoo I usually do a protective style such as two strand twist, and since my hair is already section off it’s faster to style my hair. I take each plait and split it into four and then twist it using my Shea butter. I don’t curl my ends using anything like rollers or rods I just twirl them around my finger and that’s good enough for me. When I two strand twist my hair I hardly ever use a comb to part anymore I just feel and part with my fingers. It usually takes me about 3-4 hours to finish. After I’m all done I just put on my satin cap and call it a day. This style lasts about two weeks, during this time I’ll probably co-wash my hair every other week to prolong the style. When my hair starts to get frizzy I’ll either rock a twist out or ‘fro it out with a head band. If I’m wearing a puff I co-wash every week with only 5-6 plaits around my entire head. Then just add Shea butter and let it air dry. At night I don’t braid/twist my hair, I just throw rub Shea butter on and throw on my satin cap. In the morning I spritz my hair with water and fluff, and I’m out the door. With the humidity in South Florida my hair shrinks a little. Also I hardly ever use oil on my hair, my hair doesn’t seem to like oil that much unless it’s mixed in Shea butter. I’m not really good a styling my hair, every now and then I’ll try something, usually a friend will help me out, lol. Recently I did a pompadour with a braid out in a puff and it was cute. I’ll upload some pics of some styles or post a link to my natural hair photo album. Well that’s all for now…Much Love and God Bless.

Hello World

Hey,

My name is Sylvia and I’m 22 years old, I started this blog to discuss natural hair and my trials and tribulations with my journey. I began my journey in the Summer of 2006 and did the big chop after a month and a half of transitioning, I did it myself at home but the next day my mom’s friend shaped it up so I don’t look like who shot John, lol. My hair was a about a half of an inch long, but I loved it! I was self conscious about it, I loved wearing it out…at home. It seemed like every time that I would go out people were staring at me, so I would sometimes cover it up with a head scarf, hat, or a wig. In the Spring of 2007 I had a major setback and relaxed my hair :-(, I hated it and the only reason I did was because my ex-boyfriend hated my natural hair and I was trying to make him happy. At first I tried to relax my hair at home by myself, but I had to go to the salon and get a corrective relaxer, it was ok at first but it just wasn’t me anymore. After breaking things off with him, I started a new relationship and kept thinking about how much I missed my natural hair, so I told my current boyfriend I was going to go natural again, he supported the idea of natural but didn’t really want me to cut my hair. By this point I had a relaxer for about 13 months and I went to the salon for maintenance (relaxers and roller wraps). I began my second journey for about month to two months using a half wig and a wet and wavy ponytail. Then in Spring 2008 I did the big chop, I had my boyfriend’s barber do it, and I loved it. My TWA was about a good inch all around, my co-workers gave me a second glance when I started my shift (I was one of the few Blacks that worked there), but they all seemed to like it. This time around though it seemed like my hair different from my first journey, at first I thought it was scab hair because it didn’t react to the products that I used on my hair the first time I went natural. So I started to researching natural hair care and stalking Natural hair groups for any information that could give me an explanation. From all of the research I learned I have 4a/b hair, which means I need tons and tons of moisture, and that a lot of the products I was using at the time had ingredients that was drying out my hair or stripping it of my natural oils. Many message boards suggested that I co-wash, and find a good moisturizer such as Shea butter or water/glycerin mix. So I began reading every label of every product, it seemed like time would fly by when trying to find a good shampoo or conditioner. After of few days of reading labels for hours at a time, I went to YouTube and watched other naturals give product reviews and give their advice on what to use and how to use it. My top five favorites are BlackOnyxx77, Misskrisnew, Prettydimples01, Familygoingnatural, and Jerseystylezz. I learned a lot from them and others. The products that I use now are Nubian Heritage Shea Butter Lavender and Wildflowers, Suave Conditioner Pomegranate for my co-wash, Head and Shoulders for my shampoo (once a month ), Organic Root Stimulator Replenishing Pak for my deep conditioning, and pure water for a refresher. My styling tools would be Goody’s Ouchless headbands and ponytail holders, my paddle brush, a rat tail comb for parting, and sometimes bobby pins. I try to co-wash weekly and I either two strand my twist for a protective style that will last for about two weeks or I will wear it in a puff. When I co-wash my hair I detangle in the shower with a paddle brush, I find that this works better then a wide tooth comb and I don’t have a much hair loss this way. I only shampoo and detangle once a month. I don’t use dyes in my hair currently, I have in the past and had to cut my hair, and I don’t use heat. Well that’s all for now… Thanks for reading my blog…Much love and God Bless.

Great Read!!!!

This was a very interesting and informative book. It talks about Black women and what they have gone through from post slavery to today. In this book they had narratives and qoutes from not only Black women but from other races and genders, about the struggles this group of women had to go through to become a respected citizen of the United States. I give it five out five stars. I bought it from Half.com at a great price.

Creative Style #1

This is a style that I achieved all on my own. The back is an old braid out, that I pulled back into a puff. I fluffed a small section in the front to make the pompadour and I used a hair comb to hold it in place.
