Hey,
Everyone I just came on to tell/show you the first set of braids I've done myself. It took about 2-2 1/2 hours to do the front half and they aren't perfect. They are good enough for me :-D

Interview #2 of Another Natural

Keosha

Would you please give us a short description of yourself?

I would probably describe myself as an extremely bubbly and happy person.

What does natural mean to you?

To me my natural hair means a new start and a new me.. my natural hair is a sign of my personal growth into my own true identity.

Do you remember when you got your first relaxer or how old you were?
How long did you have a relaxer?

I got my first relaxer when i was nine (i hated it and was sooo pissed)
I kept my hair relaxed for nine years after that.

When did you decide to become natural? Why?
I decided to become natural when i was 18 because i saw how beautiful it was and how much of a difference it made in someone's appearance and personality.

How long did you transition or did you do the big chop? Your first immediate thoughts after you cut your hair. The day after? Did you question your decision?
When i did my big chop i was scared as heck!! I thought i was gonna look like a freakin alien, but i actually felt more beautiful than i ever had with my relaxed hair. The next day i did somewhat question my decision as to why i did it. thinkin that maybe i did it to just follow the new trend. But when i look back on it now i know it was probably the best decision i have ever made in my life.

Do you miss anything from your relaxed days?
I dont miss anything about my relaxed days.. My hair is so much thicker and i even have a better grade of hair since i went natural.

Do you think you'll ever go back to a relaxer?
I will absolutely NEVER go back to relaxed hair. Bein natural feels too good.. lol

What do you love about your natural hair?
I think the thing i love most about my natural hair is the healthiness.. I even have more body to my hair than i did before when i was permimg it..

What's your signature style?
For right now my signature style is rockin my fro. I normally might put a pretty head band in the front.

What do you believe will be next in your journey?
In a few weeks I plan to take my fro to the lock stage.. I'm really nervous about it but super excited all at the same time.

Do you attract more attention since you've been natural?
I definitely attract more attention with my natural hair. A lot of men come up to me and tell me how beautiful it is and how much it fits my face.

What's the most common question have you've been asked regarding your hair?
I always get asked the question why. Everyone wants to know why i cut my hair off. But i always tell them until you do it for yourself you'll never know the full effect of how i feel about it.

Do you think you'll ever relax your children's hair?
I will never relax my children’s hair.. i might hot comb it but i will never put chemicals in it.

Do you think more women will make the switch over to natural now that it more accepted in our society?
I really hope women switch to natural hair.. I think It's the most beautiful thing. Just looking around at all the people who have switched to natural i mean even my mother and sister have and it really does put a change in someone's attitude and in their appearance. It really and truly enhances natural beauty and even ugly people can do that.. lol

Male Interview #2

James

What's your preception of beauty?

Confidence in oneself and appreciation of your own strengths and understanding that you cannot be perfect.

What do you think of natural hair?

It looks better.

Do you have a preference when it comes to hair on a women? Why?

If your significant other wanted to go natural would you support her?

Yes I would.

Do you think if natural hair was more of the norm it would be more accepted in our culture/society?

Not really sure because artificial hair has become a part of black culture.

Do you notice a difference in attitudes/views between naturals and relaxed/weaves?

Women with natural/relaxed hair appear to be more stuck up or pretentious. They appear to make it seem that they are better than you and that if you have to prove yourself to them if you want to continue talking to them. Women with weaves tend to be more relaxed.

Do you believe that women get relaxers to fit in or because it'll make them more appealing to society?

They get relaxers to fit into societal norms such as when they are applying to jobs.

Have you ever dated a natural? If you have did you notice a difference in hair routines between naturals and those who are relaxed? If haven't dated a natural why not?

I have dated a natural and she was concerned with her hair becoming frizzy in humid weather. She had to flat iron constantly in order for it to look presentable.

Today natural hair is shown more than ever before. Do you believe women are doing it as a lifestyle change or as a fashion statement?

As a lifestyle change, I believe.

I prefer natural hair on women because I find it more appealing but do not have anything against women wearing weaves.

My First Male Interview

Hey Again,
This is my first male interview and my friend Terran was kind enough to let me interview him. So enjoy....What's your preception of beauty?

My perception of physical beauty does not come from the norm. Not from the tv, magazines, ads, or fashion shows. Subsiding all those perceptions of a modern day beauty, my perception of beauty would fall in the category of truth. One who is truthful and not fabricated or synthetic. Hair, eyes, styles, ideas...should be originally them, and not one who follows the unnatural ways of the world. Of course, beauty also should be clean hygiene too, but eh, thats my thing.

What do you think of natural hair?

I never thought too much about natural hair in my childhood because I was so used to seeing 'perms' and 'weaves' and all the little girls hair. I barely saw natural hair now that I think about it. I never rejected it though. It was when I came to the understanding of my roots, and how important and healthy it is, mentally and physically, for our hair to be, did I have more of an appreciation for how we treat our hair.

Do you have a preference when it comes to hair on a women? Why?

Not really. While I prefer the natural route, I won't reject any sister with chemicals or weave in her hair because we all lack a certain knowledge when it comes to certain things. If that sista is willing to learn and treat her scalp healthier, that'll be even better for me. But if she won't or just doesn't care about her roots, I'll probably have to ''keep it movin''.

If your significant other wanted to go natural would you support her?

Yea

Do you think if natural hair was more of the norm it would be more accepted in our culture/society?

Well, for many reasons, it can never be accepted in this society, because the unconscious thought of self hate and the lack patience with hair is too prevalent in the black community. So its very difficult to think of natural hair as accepted or as a norm.

Do you notice a difference in attitudes/views between naturals and relaxed/weaves?

I'd have to see more natural haired sistaz to be able to correctly confirm what I see. But from what I can tell, most of the natural and relaxed sistaz that I came across behave the same. However, the natural sistaz seemed to be more cautious and aware of themselves, in terms of food, social issues, and of course, healthy hair.

Do you believe that women get relaxers to fit in or because it'll make them more appealing to society?

I believe its both, and then some. Having natural hair was never an issue until a few hundred years. Standards of beauty, the slaves' assimilation into the european society and the effort to 'recreate' the mind of black people, and the backlash from other black people if another black person decides to 'go back to their roots', all play a strong role today whether we believe it or not. Once I saw the damage that it can do to black women's hair, thats when I start to question the unnatural process of their hair. Why (especially at very early ages) are the majority of black women I know doing these things to themselves? So I think they need to really re-evaluate themselves, their history, and their health.

Have you ever dated a natural? If you have did you notice a difference in hair routines between naturals and those who are relaxed? If haven't dated a natural why not?

Ugh!!!

Hey,
I just had to come here and vent really quick about something that I read on many young women facebook statuses. It goes something like this, I don't care what these h**s think they doing but my man knows where home is at." Once upon a time I thought like this as well, but I grew up. If your man is going to cheat and doesn't care if you find out, then maybe you should leave. I mean it's not like your world is going to end if you leave. Your world will most likely end if he bring you home something that he caught from the girl around the corner. So young ladies please please don't let a dude kill you, running you through these games. Also you can't blame the other woman because your dude knows better. Letting him come back time after time, is not teaching him a lesson. Plus if you have kids, they are constantly listening and watching you, don't let them grow up that because it's just going to become a vicious cycle. But that's it for my rant. Ttyl. Many Blessings and Much love. Peace.

Natural Hair Interview: Sylvia B.K.A Kismet/Me

Would you please give us a short description of yourself?

My name is Sylvia b.k.a Kismet and I’m 22 years old college student.

What does natural mean to you or should mean to black women?
Natural to means that I’m embracing my roots and am not defined by society’s perception of beauty. By that I mean I don’t believe that I should chemically straighten my hair in order to be accepted, I think my natural hair is beautiful. Natural hair to black women should be a badge of pride, no other race in the world has hair like ours and many try to have hair like us. Many don’t see it that way.

Do you remember when you got your first relaxer or how old you were?

I remember when I had my first Jerri curl, I believe I was about 2 ½ or 3 years old. Then soon after that I received my relaxer.

How long did you have a relaxer?

I had my relaxer until I was 18 years old and I was natural for a year maybe a year and a half. Then I relapsed and relaxed my hair for a year and now am completely natural.

When did you decide to become natural? Why?

I decided to become natural during my senior year of high school. I’ve always had healthy hair but I never maintained it myself I always went to a salon. Every time it was time for touch up I would just love to play with my new growth, it was something that just amazed me. That was when I believed my perception of beauty changed.

How long did you transition or did you do the big chop?

I transitioned for about a month both times I went natural, I couldn’t stand dealing with the shedding and the two textures at once.

What were your perception of beauty before transitioning? After?

My preception of beauty before transitioning was that relaxed and weaves were what was beautiful. I was taught that having natural was unkempt and wasn’t accepted or attractive. No guy I knew never thought that natural hair was beautiful.

Your first immediate thoughts after you cut your hair? The day after? Did you question your decision?

My first immediate thoughts were wow and that’s it, and the next day it was like “this is it”. I didn’t question my decision.

Do you miss anything from your relaxed days?

The only thing I miss from my relaxed days are wash days. They were so much easier and less time consuming.

Do you think you'll ever go back to a relaxer?

No. The first time I went back to relaxers I hated it. It wasn’t me and I felt like I wasn’t being true to myself, but letting others perception of beauty define me.

What is your regime? Do it differ from when you were relaxed? Harder/easier?

Once a month a wash my hair with shampoo (Head and Shoulders) and deep condition (ORS Replenishing Pak) for about thirty to forty five minutes. Before I shampoo I divide my hair in four sections and then braid my hair in sixteen plaits, this helps a lot in my opinion. I usually shampoo in the shower, I take down one plait at a time and shampoo the scalp and let the suds from the shampoo clean my hair and I then braid it back with the shampoo still in. After I have shampooed all the plaits, I rinse the shampoo out while the plaits are still intact. It helps to squeeze the plaits while rinsing to make sure all the shampoo is out. After I’m done I repeat the same process for the deep conditioner the difference is that I detangle with my paddle brush at this stage. I use a regular clear plastic cap (unless I can’t find one then I use a good ole shopping bag )and do other stuff for about 30-45 minutes. I rinse it out the same way as I do the shampoo only this time it’s in a sink. After I shampoo I usually do a protective style such as two strand twist, and since my hair is already section off it’s faster to style my hair. I take each plait and split it into four and then twist it using my Shea butter. It differs a lot from my relaxed days because my stylist did my hair and I now I’m doing everything on my own. It’s not harder or easier because I’ve learned to do it on my own so I’m relying on someone else. I’m confident about my hair now more than ever before

What do you love about your natural hair?

I love that my hair ,it's exactly like me. It’s unique and you can hate it or love it.

Do you feel beautiful?

Yes, and it’s because I feel true to myself.

What's your signature style?

My signature style would have to be my puff.

What do you believe will be next in your journey?

To tell you the truth I don’t know, I just take it as it comes.

What type of attention have you received since you've been natural?

I don’t attract as much attention as I did when I was relaxed. Some people have questions or they’ll just stare for a second.

What type of guys do you attract now?

I attract more older/mature guys now. A lot of younger or guys around my age don’t find my hair attractive.

What's the most common question have you've been asked regarding your hair?

“How did you get your hair like that?”

Do you think you'll ever relax your children's hair?

No, I will never relax their hair. I want them to know that their hair is beautiful exactly how it is.

Do you think more women will make the switch over to natural now that it more accepted in our society?

Yes. I see that natural hair is making it’s way into the mainstream, and it just not the curly/wavy hair either. I’m seeing more twists, braids, and ‘fros on t.v. and this change is very welcomed.
